What is your experience feeding rice Krispies to rabbit?

I grew up with the idea that rice was bad for rabbits, so I never feed them any of it while growing up, but when my rabbit got sick recently, the vet told us to give her some rice cereal or regular cooked white rice to help keep weight on her. After doing a little research I found out that both raw and cooked versions are fine for rabbits in small doses (she just had 2 Tbsp).
So, this is what I did: every morning after she ate pellets and hay, I would give her 1 tsp of cooked white rice mixed with 1 tsp of greens. The greens were usually from
- one carrot washed after being peeled,
- Half a sweet potato, or some kale.
I rotated the greens every day so that it didn’t become boring for her. If she wasn’t interested in eating the rice after 20 minutes, I would just throw it away and not worry about it.
Every other day or so I gave her an artichoke leaf as well. She seemed fine with this until one morning she suddenly stopped eating hay completely (she had been happily eating 2-3 cups of high quality hay per day).
That night my parents found her laying on the bottom of the cage with her head tucked underneath herself rather than cuddled up on top of it like usual. We rushed to our vet who told us she was severely dehydrated and then sent us to an emergency clinic for rabbits.
We spent about $500 on the visit, but they gave her IV fluids and put in a stomach tube to keep her hydrated until she could start eating again (the next day). It took about another week or so before she was back to normal after having to be force fed through the tube every 4 hours.
I immediately stopped feeding her rice cereal and switched it with oatmeal instead, which I know is safe for rabbits. She seems okay now, but I’m still worried that the rapid weight loss caused by not eating hay will cause side effects later in life.
I’ve heard of other rabbit owners telling me similar stories where their rabbit got sick from malnutrition because they were only fed pellets all the time, so it seems like there’s no single best diet for rabbits.
I personally think it’s better to feed your rabbit lots of hay (good for teeth), leafy greens, fresh vegetables and grasses instead of giving in if they beg for rice Krispies! This way you’ll definitely save them from suffering malnutrition problems later on!
